A Learning Journey Our nursery is
committed to following the revised Early Years Foundation Stage 2021 which outlines the standards for the learning, development and care
of your child from birth up until age 5. Our team use the Birth to 5 Matters guidance to promote children's learning and development. All aspects of learning and development are important
for every child to build vital foundations in their development
process.
Characteristics of Effective Learning The Unique Child reaches out to relate to people and experiences using the characteristics of effective learning in all areas of the Birth to 5 Matters. We plan using these to ensure that we engage with children's different styles of learning and encourage them to try out new styles of learning too.
These characteristics are:
Focusing on children's engagement, finding out and exploring, playing with what they know and being willing to have a go.
Getting children motivated; being involved and concentrating, keep trying and enjoying achieving what they set out to do.
Creating and thinking critically Encourage thinking; having their own ideas, making links and choosing ways to do things.
Areas of Development The prime development
areas are important for the stimulation of a child's enthusiasm and
curiosity for learning. These areas also help to develop a capacity
for learning, to form relationships, and thrive throughout life.
These three prime areas are:
Communication and language Physical development Personal, social and emotional development Communication and
language development gives a child the opportunity to experience a
varying language environment, developing their confidence and skills
in self-expression. They will also develop themselves to listen and
speak in a wide range of situations.
Physical development
provides an opportunity for young children to be active and
interactive with the world around them, developing coordination,
control, and movement. They are helped to recognise the importance of
physical activity, enabling them to make healthy food and lifestyle
choices.
Finally, personal,
social and emotional development focuses on allowing a child to
develop a positive sense of themselves and others. This helps to
create positive relationships, develop respect, understand what is
appropriate behaviour within a group, develop social skills, learn
how to manage personal feelings, and importantly how to have
confidence in their own abilities.
Development and Support
Within the Birth to 5 Matters guidance, we offer support and develop children in four
specific areas. These areas help to strengthen and apply the three
prime areas mentioned before. These specific areas include:
Literacy development - focus on
reading and writing
Mathematics - focus on counting,
understanding and using numbers, calculating, shapes, spaces and
measures
World understanding - exploring
community through people, places, technology and the environment
Expressive arts and design - exploring
and playing using a range of materials and media including art,
music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology
